Kerbside bins at my rental home

Residential properties in Surf Coast Shire use a four-bin kerbside service.

All households that receive a kerbside bin service must use the following bins:

  • FOGO bin (lime green lid) for collecting food scraps and organic garden waste.
  • Recycling bin (yellow lid) for collecting paper, cardboard, plastic bottles & containers (labelled 1,2 & 5 only), and metal cans.
  • Glass-only bin (purple lid) for collecting glass bottles and jars.
  • Landfill bin (red lid) for collecting general rubbish.

When our household recycling and rubbish is sorted correctly, more can be made from our valuable resources. A small act like sorting your food scraps, glass bottles and jars, and recyclables makes a big impact.

What bins should I have at my rental home?

If you’re renting a home in an urban area or township, you should have the following standard-size bins:

If you rent a home located on a rural property where the owner pays for a rural kerbside bin service, your bin collections will vary slightly.

I live in a townhouse, unit or apartment complex, where are my bins?

Some units and townhouses may share bins because there is not enough space to store four bins for every dwelling, or there is not enough room on the kerbside for all bins to be safely emptied by the collection trucks.

Council provides these properties with larger bins that residents must share. The bins must be kept in a central location that is easily accessible by all occupants at any time.

All occupants are required to sort their waste and recycling and use the four-bin system.

What goes in each bin?

FOGO bin (lime-green lid)

Food scraps and garden clippings only. Remove all packaging, including stickers on fruit.

Recycling bin (yellow lid)

Paper, cardboard, plastic bottles & containers, metal tins and cans go in this bin.

Put your recycling in the bin loose, not in bags, and flatten boxes to save space. No glass bottles and jars in this bin - put them in your purple-lid bin instead.

Glass-only bin (purple lid)

Use this bin for empty glass bottles and jars, like those that held food and drinks. Remove the lids and keep them loose – no plastic bags or cardboard boxes.

All other types of glass, like drinking glasses, vases, mirrors go in your landfill bin (red lid).

Use this bin for household items that cannot be reused, recycled, or composted.

Do not put food scraps in this bin.

Never put these items in any kerbside bin

Batteries: When used batteries are tossed in your bins, they can start a fire in the collection truck, at the sorting facility, or landfill.

Take them to your nearest battery collection bin for FREE drop-off.

E-waste: Any item with a plug, battery or power cord can be dropped off for FREE at your nearest transfer station. This includes light globes, phones, televisions, computer equipment, power tools, and household items like irons, toasters, and hairdryers.

Chemicals:

Unwanted household chemicals cannot be put in any bin or poured down the drain. Drop them off at a FREE Detox your Home event.

Polystyrene:

Polystyrene packaging from a new appliance is accepted FREE of charge at the Anglesea and Lorne transfer stations. Do not put polystyrene in your recycling bin (yellow lid).

If you can’t get to a transfer station, put polystyrene in your landfill bin (red lid).

How do I dispose of items that are too big for my bin?

Just moved in or getting ready to move out? Do you have some large furniture or whitegoods you no longer need?

Consider these options:

  • Selling and giving away furniture and whitegoods in good working order online.
  • Donating good quality furniture to your local charity shop (call first to see if they are accepting donations), or
  • Getting it repaired.

Otherwise, take it to your local transfer station. These items are accepted FREE of charge at the Anglesea, Lorne and Winchelsea transfer stations.

  • Whitegoods e.g. washing machine, fridge, dryer etc.
  • Scrap metals e.g. BBQs, metal garden furniture, lawnmowers, fencing etc.
  • Batteries – car, boat, power tools, and AA, AAA, C, D, 6volt, 9volt & button
  • E-waste (anything with a plug, cord, or battery) such as televisions, vacuum cleaners, computers, e-bikes and more.

When are my kerbside bins emptied?

You can check you bin collection dates by:

  1. Downloading the FREE waste app, SCRRApp (the Surf Coast Rubbish and Recycling App).

SCRRApp will tell you what bin to put out on which day, and you can download and print a 12-month calendar.

SCRRApp also has an A-Z waste & recycling guide to help you sort your rubbish and recycling.

  2. Visiting Council’s website to print your own bin collection calendar.

My bin is damaged or missing, my bin wasn't collected. What do I do?

Report damaged or missing bins on Council’s website or call 5261 0600. Bins are repaired or replaced free of charge.

Contact us online to report your bin was missed by the collection truck, or only half-emptied.

If the standard-size bins do not meet your household’s waste and recycling needs, you can exchange your existing bin for a larger bin or apply for an extra bin. Fees will apply.

Vouchers for mulch, green waste and general waste.

Council provides all ratepayers with annual waste vouchers in July for free drop-off of general waste and garden waste, and free pick-up of mulch at Council’s transfer stations.

Ratepayers also receive garden waste vouchers in October to help them clean up vegetation around their property in preparation for the fire season.

The vouchers are sent to the property owner, so speak to your landlord or property manager and ask if you can use them to help maintain your rental property.
