Moriac Community Hall
Moriac Community Hall is being made fire ready with landscaping and ember-proofing works to occur across May and June.
The hall plays a key role in supporting community activities in Moriac and is the only widely accessible community facility within the township available for delivering of services after an emergency.
The project will aim to improve the defendable space around the hall and improve its ability to withstand ember attack during a bushfire.
Work will include:
- Removal of several large shrubs immediately beside the hall
- Thinning and redistribution of Australian lilies
- Pruning of a large hedge at the rear of the hall
- Planting of fire-resistant species through the gardens
- Removal of all mulch surrounding the hall for replacement with Tuscan rock, and
- Installation of ember guards on building vents.
Similar projects have been completed at Aireys Inlet Community Centre, Freshwater Creek Community Hall and Anglesea and Lorne historical societies.
Recovery after recent bushfires in towns across Victoria has reminded of the importance of community facilities as meeting places and for provision of post emergency services and advice.
Moriac Community Hall is in a key position beside the Moriac Neighbour Safer Place – Place of Last Resort.
Ensuring that the hall does not compromise access to the safer place or compromise the safety of those sheltering the safer place is vital.
