Globe Theatre
Information updated 11 April 2024
The much-loved Globe Theatre has a new floor to accommodate concerts, dances, receptions and shows for decades to come.
New Australian chestnut flooring was sealed early last week following sanding and polishing.
The floor replacement, carried out in accordance with heritage requirements, follows removal of termite-damaged boards discovered during inspection last year.
Further work expected to be completed this week includes installation of doors to under-stage access, repairs to wall panelling, painting and fitting of original skirting board which is being milled to fit the new floor.
Installation of the flooring was delayed because Australian chestnut boards are specified in the heritage permit, leading to lengthy procurement time.
Background information
Installation of new Australian chestnut timber flooring in the Globe Theatre started in early March, following the removal of termite-damaged boards.
The entire hall floor is being replaced and work including sanding, installation of skirting boards and painting will be due for completion early in April.
Termite damage was discovered during inspection last year and subsequent work has included:
- Infestation investigation and treatment
- Floor removal
- Structural engineering inspection including overall flooring structure and footings
- Stump replacement.
Termite barrier treatment is scheduled for late February.
All work is being carried out in accordance with the building’s heritage requirements.
The flooring installation start date has pushed out to March due to lengthy lead time securing Australian chestnut boards, which are specified as required in the heritage permit.
Globe Theatre was built in 1926-27, providing a venue for local soprano Marjorie Lawrence to perform on her journey to international fame, and remains a much-loved community asset used for concerts, movie screenings, weddings, dances and shows.
