The Aireys Inlet Top Shops Community Gathering Place is a placemaking project aimed at enhancing the gateway entrance to the Aireys Inlet Top Shops. This initiative focuses on creating a small-scale, low-key, vegetated coastal village space that serves as a pleasant environment for casual activities and local uses. The project will involve detailed design work to transform the area into a welcoming and functional community meeting place, without the formal feel of a plaza.

The project objectives are:

  • Enhance the Gateway Entrance - Improve the visual and functional appeal of the entrance to Aireys Inlet Top Shops.
  • Create a Community Hub - Develop a space that encourages social interaction, community gatherings, and casual activities.
  • Vegetated Coastal Design - Integrate shade trees and planting to create a natural, coastal village atmosphere.
  • Maximise Useable Space - Design the area to maximise the space available for community use.
  • Water Sensitive Urban Design - Implement sustainable design practices to manage water use and enhance environmental sustainability.

Key features will include:

  • Shade Trees - Planting of shade trees to provide natural cooling and a comfortable environment for visitors.
  • Public Seating - Installation of public seating to encourage people to relax and spend time in the area.
  • Vegetation and Planting - Incorporation of local plant species to enhance the coastal village aesthetic and support local biodiversity.
  • Sustainable Design - Use of water-sensitive urban design principles to ensure the project is environmentally friendly and sustainable.
  • Access - Reviewing the pedestrian flow and footpath design for safety and function

Benefits for the community include:

  • Community Connection - The project will create a space where residents and visitors can come together, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
  • Enhanced Aesthetics - The improved gateway will provide a visually appealing entrance to Aireys Inlet Top Shops, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
  • Environmental Sustainability - By integrating sustainable design practices, the project will contribute to the ecological health of the area.

The Aireys Inlet Top Shops Community Meeting Place project is an initiative to improve the gateway entrance to the Top Shops area. Through thoughtful design and sustainable practices, this project will create a welcoming, functional, and environmentally friendly space for the community to enjoy.

Please note: Major Roads Projects are planning to install a pedestrian crossing from the top shops across the Great Ocean Road. Works for the Top Shops Community Gathering will be aligned with these crossings works, minimising the impact to the community.
