Your New Career

The Building Services Team at Council supports our community through compliance, enforcement and recordkeeping activities under the guidance of the Building Act and associated legislation. The team works in a fast paced and complex environment where attention to detail and team work are essential. This role is to provide technical administration support to registered building practitioners which will help the candidate gain industry experience and legislative knowledge. In return, the registered practitioners commit to provide mentoring, upskilling and knowledge sharing to help the successful candidate towards becoming registered.

The successful candidate will be expected to have made their own independent arrangements to continue obtaining mandatory inspections required for registration- which is why the role is part time. Surf Coast acknowledges the importance of Cadets completing mandatory inspections. Some flexibility will occasionally be provided when an inspection opportunity is proposed by the candidate to the Coordinator and it is mutually agreeable.

What you will bring to the Role

The successful candidate will be comfortable working under the direction of registered professionals, be self-directed and able to handle high volume, complex and potentially emotionally charged cases. You will be comfortable organising stakeholder communications - both written and in person. You will be comfortable being accountable and transparent in your activities - regularly reporting on the status of your work.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Made your own independent arrangements to continue obtaining the inspections required for registration.
  • Have excellent administration skills, written and verbal communication, and attention to detail
  • Be open to learn
  • Be a strong team player.

 

Key Selection Criteria

Mandatory Qualifications and Experience

  • Completed Advanced Diploma or higher in Building Industry accredited course and actively working towards industry registration.
  • Demonstrated experience in Building Legislation understanding and ability to navigate legislation to find required information.
  • Strong technical administration skills (case related document management), attention to detail and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Self-directed and able to handle high volume, complex and potentially emotionally charged cases.
  • Current Victorian driver’s license.
  • You have the Right to live and work in Australia.
  • A current WWCC.
  • Police Check results that are suitable for this position (will be arranged by Surf Coast Shire Council).  A complete international criminal history check is required if the person has worked or lived overseas for any period of time OR a complete national criminal history check is required if the person has only ever worked in Australia.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Working knowledge of GPS/Mapping software.
  • Working knowledge of Swimming Pool legislation, administration and enforcement options.
  • Working knowledge of Report and Consent guidance.
  • Strong understanding of POPE legislation and comfortable with internal and external stakeholder coordination. 
  • Reporting experience or willingness to learn.
