The Wurdi Baierr Aquatic and Recreation Centre project in Torquay has reached an exciting threshold with main construction now underway.
Contractors have completed preliminary site works, including delivery of a new car park and a new path linking the car park, Wadawurrung Way and Kuwarrk Lane with the existing Wurdi Baierr Stadium.
New fencing now encloses the main construction site where pools will be excavated and the double-storey building will rise.
The centre is a partnership project involving the Australian Government, the Victorian Government and Surf Coast Shire Council.
Construction is significantly supporting the local economy, with 70 per cent of the 71 workers inducted to date being from the Geelong Region Alliance region including Surf Coast Shire, and 89 per cent of the total project expenditure let to date going towards the G21 economy.
Stage one main construction works will include:
- 25-metre indoor pool for lap/squad swimming
- Warm water indoor pool for exercise, hydrotherapy and leisure
- Gym and programs spaces
- Allied health suites
- Café and supporting amenities.
Stage two works in planning include:
- A dedicated indoor learn to swim pool
- Indoor splash park
- Spa, sauna and steam room
- More change rooms.
Surf Coast Shire Council Mayor Mike Bodsworth: “We are excited to have reached this significant milestone with main construction of Wurdi Baierr Aquatic and Recreation Centre underway.
“Preliminary works on the site including construction of the new car park have progressed well and we thank users of the busy sporting and school precinct for their continued understanding while access changes are in place.
“This centre will be a wonderful asset for our community. We look forward to the health and wellbeing benefits it will bring for people of all ages and abilities for decades to come.”
Federal Member for Corangamite Libby Coker: “Torquay has long advocated for a world-class aquatic centre – for some community members this has been a journey of more than 60 years – and I’m so pleased that we are now delivering on their calls with a development that will benefit the region for many years to come.”
Victorian Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney: “This investment is about more than just bricks and mortar – it’s about creating a vibrant space where families can connect, stay active, and make the most of everything our stunning Surf Coast has to offer. Together we’re building a lasting legacy of health, fun and community spirit for generations to enjoy!”
Progression to main construction has meant a series of changes to access to, and use of, adjoining areas. These include:
- The new car park at the southern end of the works site near Council’s Civic Building is open and accessible from Wadawurrung Way. It has the same number of parks as the former loop car parking area on Wadawurrung Way.
- Wadawurrung Way is now closed near Kuwarrk Lane intersection. People can still access Wurdi Baierr Stadium from Wadawurrung Way, Kuwarrk Lane and the new car park via a new accessible path.
- One netball court will be removed to make space for the new building to fit on the site and to share its entry point with the existing stadium. The three other netball courts will remain open, with new fencing ensuring safe access.
The cost for stage one works is $46.34 million. Surf Coast Shire Council is grateful to receive $20 million from the Australian Government and $16.68 million from the Victorian Government. Stage two works will be fully funded by the Victorian Government, with the amount to be confirmed.
Main construction is expected to be complete late in 2026.
