Surf Coast Shire Council will be undertaking vegetation management works on local roads in Fairhaven, to reduce fire fuel loads and improve safety and asset protection.

Surf Coast Shire has several towns that fall into the highest risk for impact and consequence from the threat of bushfire within Victoria. Targeted vegetation removal work is conducted in these towns to make sure they are always fire ready.

These works will be conducted after Easter, starting on Monday 28 April and are expected to be completed by Friday 9 May. This is before the 2025 Winter Fuel Reduction Program which is planned for Fairhaven, Moggs Creek and Aireys Inlet.

Council’s fire preparedness works align with management activities undertaken by our partner agencies such as Forest Fire Management Victoria.

Works will be undertaken on the following roads:

  • Werona Road
  • Yandanah Road
  • Birralee Road
  • Banool Road

These roads are included as they have an excessive amount of vegetation on the roadsides that contribute to the fire risk in the area. The current level of vegetation reduces access for emergency vehicles and residents, and will make fighting a fire in the area more difficult.

“Removing this vegetation will help emergency vehicles access the areas, as well as support containment of fire if one was to break out in the area,” said Cr Leon Walker.

“Even though Autumn has started, we know our fire risk is still high and fire preparedness is an ongoing activity.”

The works will involve removal of weedy, non-indigenous vegetation within the road reserve. Indigenous vegetation will be retained. Some vegetation may be retained for the purpose of minimising potential erosion risks.

Council officers will mark the boundary between private property and the road reserve prior to marking vegetation for removal by contractors.

Traffic control will be in place during the works, and minor delays may be experienced. Access to properties will be maintained throughout the works.

“These works will complement our winter fuel reduction program, a program we have been running since 2009,” said Cr Walker.

Thank you to the State Government for funding this important vegetation management work through the CFA Vegetation Management Grant.
