Torquay school precinct road safety works to commence
Published on 21 June 2024
Surf Coast Shire Council is undertaking road safety works near Torquay College and St Therese Primary School, to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow.
The works include:
- Widening of Grossmans Road, Eton Road and Illawong Drive roundabout.
- New raised pedestrian crossings on:
- Eton Road near Sandy Way
- Grossmans Road just east of the roundabout.
- New speed hump on Grossmans Road eastbound lane approach to the roundabout.
- New crossing point on Eton Road, just south of the roundabout.
- Updated signage along Grossmans Road.
Works will commence on Monday 24 June, and expected completion date of all works in the area is Friday 12 July.
“These important upgrades will make it safer for children as well as adults to cross roads in this area at all times,” said Mayor Cr Liz Pattison
“We apologise for the inconvenience of starting these works in the last week of term, but three weeks is needed to complete the works.”
The first stage of works to be completed during the last week of term is the new raised pedestrian crossing on Eton Road.
“We have worked with the contractor Fulton Hogan to start the works on Eton Road to minimise the disruption to school traffic, and for works to be paused during peak school drop off and pick up to minimise the inconvenience,” she said.
“During the school holidays they will complete the remainder of the works along Grossmans Road.”
The new pedestrian crossings will not have school crossing supervisors during drop off and pick up times. They are raised pedestrian crossings – which will give priority to pedestrians at all times (unlike school crossings) with the appropriate signage and road markings in place.
These works are funded through the Transport Accident Commission and Surf Coast Shire Council.
