Planning is underway to replace the ‘informal pallet bridge’ near the Spring Valley Bike Park and Spring Valley Playground with a pedestrian footbridge, that will be accessible for everyone in the community.

The footbridge will provide another access point across Spring Creek and will connect with the new development in Surf Views Estate.

“It is great to see this project getting underway,” said Cr Liz Pattison.

“The pallets that kids have placed there have provided an informal crossing point for years, but it’s great to be able to have a proper crossing that everyone can use,” she said.

Removing the pallets will allow the creek to re-establish its natural flow and reduce the erosion of the creek bed and bank from bikes being ridden over the creek.

Revegetation works around the footings of the new bridge are included in the project. Further revegetation works will be considered once the creek has had time to regenerate and restore its natural flow.

“This new bridge will provide a safe crossing point for kids to ride to school, taking them away from the busy highway,” she said.

“As Torquay grows it’s important to have links that connect new communities and encourage more people to use sustainable transport methods.”

Council officers are working closely with relevant agencies to ensure the necessary permits are in place before works start. Works are expected to start later in the year once all permits are approved.

These works are funded by council through the developer contribution fund.
