New features on Fischer Street

Council has completed roadworks along Torquay's Fischer Street and Merrijig Drive to make it safer for all road users.

Roundabout extensions
Fischer Street users would have noticed the roundabout extensions, which feature a red pavement area: a visual aid which encourages cars and smaller vehicles to remain within the black asphalt part of the roundabout.

Providing clearly-defined circulation lanes in this way helps to discourage small vehicles from speeding through the roundabouts, where they have space to do so.

The red pavement is not an impediment to larger vehicles and can be driven over by buses and commercial vehicles who need greater road space.

The treatment also discourages overtaking of cyclists through the roundabouts by clearly defining that cyclists, motorbikes and cars all should utilise the black pavement when travelling through the roundabout.

Council will monitor the effectiveness of the red pavement.

What is a sharrow?

Fischer Street also has ‘sharrows’: shared lane marking which indicates that cars should expect to share the road with cyclists. They are used throughout Australia and overseas.

Please take care and take your time as you're travelling along Fischer Street.

This road is the main cycling corridor between Torquay town centre and north Torquay and is used by families, kids and cars.
