The City of Greater Geelong and Surf Coast Shire Council have received analysis grants through the TAC Local Government Grant Program to undertake an options analysis for developing a safe cycling link between Torquay and Geelong.

Residents are being asked to provide feedback about their experiences riding between Torquay and Geelong in an online survey.

A key goal for both the City of Greater Geelong and Surf Coast Shire Council is to provide a safe and integrated cycling network to meet community needs.

Both councils want to encourage active transport modes, such as cycling, to reduce dependence on cars and improve health outcomes for the community.

The survey is focussed primarily on commuters that ride bicycles or e-bikes between these locations, however we also want to hear from those community members who might ride if cycling infrastructure was installed.

Information gathered from the five-minute online survey will be used to understand existing community sentiment, concerns, and ultimately guide in the decision-making process.

Data collected through the TAC Light Insights Trial has also been used by the Councils to inform some of the analysis work undertaken.

Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM said it’s important to get the community’s feedback.

“Many residents are passionate about improving our cycle infrastructure and this survey is a great opportunity for the community to have their say,” Mayor Kontelj said.

“Safe cycling links are so important in encouraging more people to opt to ride, which encourages active lifestyles, helps reduce traffic congestion and is better for our environment,” said Surf Coast Shire Mayor Cr Mike Bodsworth.

It’s great to see this safe cycling corridor analysis being developed, I encourage all cyclists to complete the survey.”

TAC CEO Tracey Slatter said it was important to support local councils in their planning efforts to provide safe travel options for all road users.

“Prioritising the safety of vulnerable road users is as important as ever. We encourage the community to share their insights to help create safe infrastructure solutions for people cycling between Geelong and Torquay. We want everyone to be safe, no matter what mode of transport they use.”
