Changes to Council services for Thursday’s Extreme fire danger day
Published on 12 February 2025
In line with the Country Fire Authority’s (CFA) forecast of an Extreme fire danger day on the Surf Coast for Thursday 13 February, there will be several facilities closures and changes to Council services.
The changes are being put in place to protect the safety of the community and Council employees.
On days rated by the CFA as having Extreme fire danger, Council employees and contractors will not work or travel in fire risk zones at the highest risk times.
The main changes for Thursday are as follows:
- Lorne Kindergarten, Anglesea Kindergarten and Jan Juc Pre-School will be closed;
- Anglesea Landfill and Transfer Station will have reduced opening hours: Landfill open 5am-10am, Transfer Station open 9am-10am. (Other Waste facilities will operate to standard Thursday hours);
- All scheduled kerbside bin collections in high fire risk areas will be completed before 10am. Residents are asked to put their bins out Wednesday night;
- Public litter bins and public toilets in high bushfire risk areas will only be serviced before 10am, and potentially in the evening should conditions ease;
- Council managed reserves and facilities in bushfire risk areas will be closed; and
- Lorne and Anglesea Visitor Information Centres will be closed, with a remote service available from Torquay.
General Manager Community Life Damian Waight said Council is monitoring the possibility of dangerous fires, with forecast strong northerly winds posing an extreme risk.
“We understand there will be inconvenience for some people as a result of these changes, but we are clear that the safety of the community and our staff is always our number one priority,” he said.
“We thank the community for understanding.”
Based on the CFA’s forecast, it is expected all services will return to standard operation on Friday 14 February. Any changes to this will be communicated.
Council’s Facebook and Instagram pages will carry further updates as they become available, while our website provides an up-to-date list of changes at surfcoast.vic.gov.au/servicechanges.
“We urge everyone to be prepared for the Extreme fire danger day by downloading the VicEmergency app, having a fire plan and knowing when to leave, and following the CFA’s advice,” Mr Waight said.
Information about fire danger ratings is available on the CFA website.
