Winchelsea Common Nature Reserve

Winchelsea Common Nature Reserve, jointly managed by Council and the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, has reopened following works to remove and reduce lead contamination related to past use as a shooting range.

You can now access a high quality gravel loop walking track suitable for all abilities, a small fenced off-leash dog area and a mown grass play area. The walking track winds through beautiful old River Red Gums with an understory of native grasses and wildflowers.

Some parts of the Common remain fenced and inaccessible – the lead was not able to be removed from these areas as the removal process would have destroyed the significant grassy woodland vegetation remnants. The blue zone on the below plan shows the publically accessible parts of the reserve and onsite signage designates the restricted areas.
